School Committee Member Peter Gates, who has served on the Committee for the last nine years and will not run for re-election this year, bid his farewell to town government in a May 18 meeting.
State Rep. Patrick Kearney (D-Scituate) and a representative of State Sen. Patrick O’Connor’s office attended the meeting to present Gates with a citation for his service.
“The Massachusetts House of Representatives and the Massachusetts State Senate offers its sincerest congratulations to Peter Gates in recognition of nine years of service to the students, families, and educators of the Scituate Public School System through his work on the Situate School Committee,” Kearney said. “His leadership, commitment to education, and thoughtful advocacy have helped guide the district through both challenges and successes.
Gates said he joined the School Committee “to make Scituate proud” and make the district one that graduates are proud to have attended.
School Committee Chair Nicole Brandolini said Gates’ professional knowledge of finance helped him ask critical questions about the budget and credited him with playing a central role in establishing the special education stabilization fund.
Gates is a member of the schools’ finance subcommittee and served as chair during the Covid-19 pandemic, “one of the most volatile times,” Brandolini said.
“Managing through decision-making during that first year was extremely stressful, but Peter took on the role and kept us steady,” she said. “I personally have learned an incredible amount from you over these years.”
Gates closed out the speeches by thanking his fellow School Committee members.
“You guys have all been amazing, and Scituate is in great hands,” he said.
