Sand Hills residents urged the Scituate Select Board to take additional steps to address speeding vehicles, electric bicycles and illegal fireworks along Turner Road, saying the issues have become an increasing safety concern during the busy summer season.
Several residents spoke during the board's public comment period, describing speeding traffic, groups of e-bike riders traveling through the neighborhood and fireworks that they said have disrupted the area. Residents also expressed concern about pedestrian safety, particularly for children and families walking along Turner Road.
One resident said neighbors have repeatedly raised concerns and worry it will take a tragedy before additional action is taken.
"I just don't want it to take a fatality before somebody decides that maybe we should do something," the resident said.
Residents asked the town to consider additional traffic calming measures, increased police enforcement and other steps to slow traffic through the neighborhood. Several also questioned whether more could be done to address e-bike use, saying some riders travel at speeds comparable to motor vehicles while sharing the road with pedestrians.
Town Administrator James Boudreau said the town plans to deploy a portable speed trailer in the area to collect traffic data and remind drivers of their speed. He also noted that state lawmakers are considering legislation related to e-bikes, an issue that several communities are watching as municipalities seek additional guidance on regulation.
Board members discussed the town's existing noise ordinance and encouraged residents to continue reporting illegal fireworks and other violations when they occur so police have the opportunity to respond. The discussion also touched on the challenges of addressing issues that involve both local enforcement and state law.
Residents acknowledged that no single solution would resolve every concern but urged the town to continue looking for ways to improve safety along Turner Road.
The board did not take formal action on the residents' requests during the meeting. Town officials said the speed trailer will be deployed in the neighborhood, and the discussion concluded with board members encouraging residents to remain engaged as the town continues evaluating the issues.
