Norwell Town Administrator Will Not Renew Contract
Norwell Town Administrator Darleen Sullivan announced March 4 that she will not renew her contract when it expires in June, bringing an end to more than 13 years working for the town. Sullivan shared the decision during the Norwell Select Board meeting, explaining that she had previously informed the board of her plans in December but wanted to formally make the announcement in a public setting.
“So my contract is up in June of this year and I have decided not to renew my contract.”
Sullivan said she plans to remain in the position through the end of the fiscal year and continue working with town leadership through the upcoming budget season and annual Town Meeting. She said the timeline will allow the Select Board to begin planning for a transition while ensuring continuity in town operations.
“I will be staying though through the budget season, obviously, and through the town meeting and get us through to June 30th.”
Sullivan described the decision as emotional after more than a decade serving the community and working with town departments and residents. She said her time in Norwell has been deeply meaningful and credited the town’s leadership and staff for helping position the community well for the future.
“Norwell's a great town. I'm excited to see what's next for me, but it's bittersweet.”
Sullivan reflected on her long tenure working in the community and said the relationships she built during that time will remain important to her even after leaving the role.
“I actually love this town. I put everything into this town. My entire heart is here every day and we'll still always have a piece here.”
Select Board Chair Peter Smellie thanked Sullivan for her announcement and noted the town will have opportunities in the coming months to formally recognize her service before her departure.
Sullivan also told the board she intends to assist with the transition process and will support town leadership as they begin considering next steps for filling the position.
