Norwell Middle School Math Team Wins Regional Championship
NORWELL, MA – The Norwell Middle School Math Team claimed victory at the Southeastern Regional Math Counts competition, earning first place in the team category. This marks only the second time in over a decade that Norwell has won the prestigious event, which features top-performing middle school students from across the region.
Leading the team to success were Nola Carney, Pranjala Gowdru , Joseph Yazbeck, and Chase Wolbach, who worked together to secure the championship. Several Norwell students also excelled in the individual competition, with six finishing in the top 10:
* Joseph Yazbeck – 1st place
* Nola Carney – 4th place
* Chase Wolbach – 5th place
* Daniel Lee – 6th place
* Noah Lendler – 8th place
* Kellen Blair – 10th place
“This is an incredible achievement for our team,” said Rick Wolbach, one of the school’s math coaches. “They’ve worked hard all year, and to see their dedication pay off at such a high level is really exciting.”
The Math Counts competition challenges students with complex problem-solving and mathematical reasoning exercises. Participants compete in both individual and team rounds, solving advanced algebra, geometry, and probability problems.
“This experience has been amazing,” said eighth-grader Nola Carney, a three-year member of the team. “It’s so rewarding to apply what we’ve learned in class to real challenges and competitions like this.”
With their regional win, the team now looks ahead to the state-level Math Counts competition, where they will compete against other top teams from across Massachusetts.
“We’re so proud of these students,” said Norwell Middle School Principal Jim Dupille. “This accomplishment is a reflection of their hard work, our dedicated coaches, and the school’s commitment to strong academic programs.”
