Norwell High School Study Gets Green Light
The Norwell School Committee has approved a $1.5 million feasibility study to determine the future of Norwell High School, exploring whether to renovate the existing structure or construct a new facility. This decision follows the Massachusetts School Building Authority's (MSBA) invitation for the school to enter its Eligibility Period, a critical first step in accessing state funding for significant school construction projects.
The MSBA's Eligibility Period, which spans 270 days, evaluates a district's financial readiness and community support for a proposed project. During this phase, the district must meet several requirements, including securing funding for the feasibility study, forming a school building committee, and submitting detailed maintenance and enrollment reports. Successfully completing this stage is necessary for moving forward in the MSBA’s grant process.
Superintendent Matthew Keegan and Director of Finance and Operations Warren MacCallum attended the MSBA board meeting where Norwell High School was officially accepted into the program. MacCallum explained the importance of the feasibility study, stating, "It is a significant undertaking and quite frankly one that must be done."
Professionals will assess the building's systems, mechanics, and structures to recommend the best course of action. It will examine not only renovation possibilities but also potential sites for new construction if upgrading the current building proves impractical. The process, expected to take about two years, will culminate in a presentation to the town for approval of the project's scope and cost at a future meeting.
“The Eligibility Period is a critical step in the MSBA’s process of evaluating potential work with Norwell High School,” stated MSBA Executive Director Mary Pichetti. “We look forward to our continued partnership with the district as it enters the Eligibility Period.”
