Massive Fire Engulfs South Shore Sports Center

Officials say beloved local facility, home to South Shore Select and South Shore Baseball, may be torn down after intense overnight blaze

A fast-moving fire tore through the South Shore Sports Center in Hingham late Wednesday night, causing extensive damage and leaving the building structurally unsafe.

The fire broke out shortly after 11 p.m. at the complex at 55 Recreation Park Drive, which is home to South Shore Baseball and South Shore Select Soccer programs. Flames were visible from the roof as fire crews arrived on the scene.

The size of the building and the materials inside made the fire difficult to contain, according to statements made by fired officials. Firefighters faced challenges due to water pressure issues in the area, which required multiple alarms to bring in additional support.

Crews initially attempted to fight the fire from inside but were forced to retreat when conditions inside the building became too dangerous. Parts of the structure were deemed unsafe, limiting the ability to fully extinguish flames in some areas.

The fire is believed to have started on the second floor, near the kitchen area. There were no reported injuries.

Due to the severity of the damage, officials told NBC10 Boston that the South Shore Sports Center will likely need to be torn down. The complex has been a popular destination for families across the region, hosting year-round youth sports, tournaments, and recreational programs.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
