A Marshfield man was arrested Monday following an investigation into the alleged electronic receipt of child pornography, according to police.

The Marshfield Police Department Detective Unit conducted the investigation in collaboration with the Massachusetts State Police Cyber Crime Unit.

Authorities said investigators obtained court-authorized subpoenas to an internet service provider during the investigation. Information returned through the subpoenas identified the subscriber as Nicholas Miller, 32, who resides in Building 5, Unit 1 of the Castle Green Apartment Complex in Marshfield.

Detectives subsequently conducted both visual and electronic surveillance before obtaining a court-authorized search warrant for the residence.

On Monday, March 30, members of the Marshfield Police Detective Unit and State Police cybercrime investigators executed the warrant at the apartment.

During the search, investigators seized electronic devices belonging to Miller and located images police say were consistent with child pornography.

Miller was placed under arrest and charged with possession of child pornography. He was transported to the Marshfield Police Station for processing and later transferred to Plymouth District Court for arraignment.

Police said the seized devices will undergo a full forensic examination by the Massachusetts State Police Cyber Crime Unit. Additional charges may be filed depending on the results of that analysis.

Investigators are also working to determine the origin of the images and videos.

“The exploitation of children is one of the most serious and disturbing crimes we investigate,” Marshfield Police Chief Phillip A. Tavares said in a statement. “I commend the diligent work of our detectives and our partners in the Massachusetts State Police Cyber Crime Unit for their commitment to protecting vulnerable victims.”

Tavares added that authorities will continue to aggressively investigate cases involving the exploitation of children.

“If you are involved in the exploitation of children, you will be identified and held accountable,” he said.

Police said the investigation remains active.
