60-year-old Hingham man has been arrested after allegedly firing two shots during a road rage confrontation in the Hingham Public Library parking lot Thursday afternoon, according to the Hingham Police Department.
Steven A. License, 60, of Hingham, was arrested Friday by Hingham detectives at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, where he is being treated for an injury police said was not caused by gunfire.
License is charged with assault to murder, two counts of attempted assault and battery with a firearm, assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and disorderly conduct.
He is expected to be arraigned Friday, July 24, at the hospital, police said.
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:22 p.m. Thursday, July 23, when officers responded to the Hingham Public Library at 66 Leavitt St. for reports of gunfire following an apparent road rage incident involving a car and a truck.
The truck had left the parking lot before officers arrived, while the car remained at the scene.
According to police, License was a passenger in the car and fired a gun during the confrontation. Officers recovered the firearm at the scene. Police said License has a license to carry a firearm.
The female driver of the car was not injured. License was transported to the hospital with what police described as an apparent non-gunshot injury.
The driver of the truck later contacted police and was not injured.
Police said the confrontation began several miles from the library when the driver of the car allegedly threw a napkin out of the window. The truck driver then followed the car until both vehicles pulled into the library parking lot.
The female driver of the car and the male driver of the truck got out of their vehicles, approached each other and became involved in what police described as a heated verbal argument.
According to police, License remained inside the car and allegedly fired two shots as the truck driver was walking back toward his vehicle.
No one was struck by the gunfire.
The arrest follows an investigation by the Hingham Police Department. The charges against License are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
