Two Hanover High School hockey players received Boston Bruins-MIAA Sportsmanship Awards this week for “exemplifying a commitment to sportsmanship, teamwork and dedication both on and off the ice.”

The two winners were Vanessa Federico, a senior captain of the girls’ team, and Flynn Gardner, a senior and goalie on the boys’ team.

Winners show sportsmanlike conduct “that brings honor to self, team, school, and community” and “a commitment to teamwork by providing all members with recognition of their talents, an opportunity to contribute to the team, and a spirit of camaraderie,” read a statement from the Boston Bruins.

Federico and Gardner were two of the 29 total winners from across the state.

The boys’ season ended with the team holding a 16-2-2 record after Gardner blocked 401 shots, earning him a 0.944 save percentage.

"Flynn Gardner has been a dependable, quiet leader for Hanover High School in both ice hockey and lacrosse. He demonstrates a strong work ethic, steady composure, and humility in his achievements,” Head Coach Jonny Abban. “Whether making saves in net on the ice or on the field, he consistently leads with character, reliability, and quiet determination."

The girls’s team wrapped up the season with a 14-6 record, with Federico scoring 4 goals and 14 assists.

“Vanessa is an outstanding student-athlete who is not only engaged in with her hockey team and its success this season, but she is highly involved with community service that benefits students with mental health issues,” Head Coach Dan Daiely said.

Award winners were honored during the second intermission of the Bruins-Jets game March 19 at TD Garden.
