Prescribed Burn for June 6 in Hanover to Combat Invasive Species
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), with support from the Hanover Fire Department, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Bureau of Forest Fire Control and Forestry, the Hanover Conservation Commission, the Hanover Police Department, and the Hanover Department of Public Works, will be conducting a prescribed and controlled burn in the area between 965 and 1075 Washington Street (Route 53).
The controlled burn will take place at approximately 9:00 am on Friday, June 6, 2025. This is subject to change based on weather conditions.
This planned, controlled burn is necessary to remove an invasive species of weed that has overgrown a stormwater retention basin. The overgrowth has obstructed a ccess and delayed essential maintenance. Once cleared, MassDOT will perform critical repairs to the basin to address ongoing drainage and flooding issues, which are impacting the safety of motorists traveling along Route 53.
Several options were considered, but the controlled burn option was deemed the most cost-effective, efficient, and timely way to perform this work while ensuring safety and environmental preservation in the area. Technical assistance from DCR will help ensure the burn is carried out under the most appropriate conditions for public safety.
To complete the work, lane restrictions will be in place on Route 53 in the area of Washington Street and Old Washington/Pond Streets. Traffic will be managed by the Hanover Police Department with assistance from MassDOT. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and expect possible delays.
The controlled burn will only proceed if weather conditions are ideal, ensuring the safety of all involved. Residents should be aware that the burn may produce a moderate amount of dark-colored smoke in the area. This is temporary and will be carefully monitored by trained personnel.
