Hanover High Senior Prank Leads to Cleanup and Investigation

School officials confirm no permanent damage; Class of 2025 to cover cleanup costs

Approximately 90 students entered Hanover High School after hours Thursday night to carry out a senior prank that resulted in a significant mess and a police investigation, according to school officials.

The prank left the building covered in toilet paper, confetti, plastic wrap, and smashed pineapples. The mess was discovered during a routine evening patrol. While rumors of broken glass in a science lab circulated online, school officials later confirmed there was no permanent damage.

In a joint statement, Superintendent Matthew Ferron and Principal Matthew Mattos said, “Windows were not broken, floors were not damaged, and there was no graffiti. The damage was largely superficial.” They noted that the most time-consuming task was cleaning up the smashed fruit.

"Thanks to the swift response from administrators, teachers, custodial staff, and students, the school was cleaned and fully operational by 8:00 am on Friday morning. We appreciate their efforts in making sure the day proceeded as normal," the statement said.

The administrators described the prank as “immature” and “disrespectful,” adding that it did not reflect the creativity or humor typically associated with senior pranks.

The Class of 2025 has issued a formal apology and has agreed to pay for all associated costs, including any required cleaning services, repairs, and custodial staff overtime.

Hanover High School reopened as scheduled Friday morning following cleanup efforts by staff and students. The school and Hanover Police Department are continuing to investigate the incident. Officials stated that any disciplinary action will remain confidential.

"We recognize the understandable desire to assign blame and call for immediate consequences. The Hanover High School administration is actively working with the Hanover Police and Facilities Departments to conclude an investigation," said the statement. "While the actions of those involved were clearly inappropriate, we also recognize that young people make mistakes, and this moment presents an important opportunity for learning, growth, and accountability."
