Marshfield man charged in library recording case
COHASSET — A Marshfield man is facing charges after police say he secretly recorded individuals inside a restroom at the Paul Pratt Public Library.
Thomas D. Campbell, 63, was arrested in connection with the incident and charged with video recording individuals in a state of nudity without their knowledge or consent, along with illegal wiretapping, according to Cohasset police.
The investigation began when library staff discovered a hidden recording device inside a unisex restroom and notified authorities. Detectives secured the device and conducted a forensic analysis, which confirmed it contained both video and audio recordings of individuals using the restroom without their knowledge.
At least one adult victim has been identified and notified, and investigators are working to determine whether there are additional victims.
“This is a serious and disturbing violation of personal privacy. I commend the library staff for their quick action, which directly led to the resolution of this case. This investigation also highlights the critical role that video surveillance systems play in protecting the public and solving crimes,” said Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley.
Police said digital forensic analysis and surveillance footage helped identify Campbell as the suspect.
Campbell was held on $2,500 cash bail at Cohasset Police and was scheduled to be arraigned in Quincy District Court on March 20.
In a follow-up message to families, Quigley said detectives reviewed available digital evidence and found that no children appeared in the footage analyzed so far.
“Our investigation remains active. Should additional files be discovered or any further victims identified, appropriate notifications will be made promptly and in accordance with applicable laws and best practices,” Quigley said.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information to contact the department’s Criminal Investigation Unit.
All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
