Marshfield High School to start freshman boys’ lacrosse team

The school has not had a freshman boys’ team for nine years

MARSHFIELD — The school committee voted to establish a freshman boys’ lacrosse team for the 2026 spring season at a Feb. 10 meeting, where Athletic Director Bill Battis cited the sport’s popularity at Marshfield High School and estimated that the program would cost less than $5,000.

Battis said that 42 freshman boys had already signed up for the future team. That is compared to 21 sophomores, 12 juniors and 16 seniors who signed up for the older teams.

“It's certainly one of our showcase sports in the springtime,” he said.

Marshfield High School has run only a varsity and junior varsity program for the past nine years.

Enrolling all of the students who signed up in just two teams would be “impossible for the coaches and the players,” Battis said.

The salary range for the coach would be $2,500 to $4,400, but Battis said he does not expect to hire a freshman coach at the top of that range, instead projecting that their salary would be $3,300 to $3,500.

Battis also said that the team should play 12 to 14 games and estimated that the transportation budget for 6 to 7 away games would be between $1,600 and $2,000.

The last expense he predicted was $500 to $600 for officials during games.
