HANOVER — Eight years after first hoisting a state rugby championship trophy in 2017, the Hanover High boys rugby team has returned to the summit of Division 2 with an emphatic 59-7 victory over Brookline at Curry College on Saturday, June 14.

The win caps a long and determined journey back to the top for the Hawks, who have been a perennial powerhouse in the sport since its official adoption by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). Hanover has reached the state semifinals every year since 2017, including three previous losses in the final. But this year’s team left no doubt.

Saturday’s championship match was all Hanover from the opening whistle. The scoring began just four minutes in, and the Hawks never looked back. Senior captain Lochlan Garvey was a standout performer, contributing heavily on both sides of the ball. In addition to converting all but two of his kicks, Garvey played a key role in setting up late-game tries.

A robust senior class powered Hanover’s championship run, showcasing depth and experience across the board. Several players made scoring contributions, including seniors Love’on Flowers (two tries), David Bonilla, and Juneau Mofford, along with junior Matthew Ellerby, the only underclassman to reach the try zone. Late in the game, longtime starters Aidan Boutin and John Keegan were subbed out to well-deserved recognition from the crowd, marking the end of stellar four-year varsity careers. In total, 17 seniors will graduate from this year's squad, with most expected to continue their rugby careers in college.

One emotional highlight of the day came after the match, when the team presented a framed jersey to senior Noah Balewicz. Although he did not play this season due to a lymphoma diagnosis and ongoing treatment, his presence and perseverance remained a powerful source of inspiration for the team. Balewicz, who also played football and wrestled for Hanover, was recognized by his teammates for his continued courage and strength throughout the year.

The championship celebration extended well beyond the pitch. The Hanover Police and Fire Departments provided team escorts before and after the game, adding to the festive atmosphere. School leadership, including Superintendent Matt Ferron and Principal Matt Mattos, were on the sidelines to show support. Student contributions were also central to the event, with junior Sienna Lamond performing the National Anthem and freshman Luca Ciccolo capturing game photos.
