Scituate Approves Trial Beach Bathroom Program for Egypt Beach
In a bid to improve beachgoer amenities, the Scituate Select Board voted Monday night to approve a rental bathroom facility at Egypt Beach for the 2025 season, marking a significant upgrade to the town's beach facilities.
The approved plan includes a trailer-based facility featuring both standard and accessible restrooms, with daily cleaning services throughout the beach season. The total cost is expected to range from $34,000 to $42,690 for the season, depending on water supply arrangements.
"The one we have to get us going is Egypt Beach; it has all the amenities we need - water, sewer, and electric," Beach Commission representative Dr. Gordon Price told the board. The location's existing infrastructure makes it an ideal test site for the program.
The decision came after reviewing multiple options, including permanent structures that could cost upwards of $400,000. Board members ultimately favored the rental approach as a way to evaluate the service before making longer-term investments.
The rental facility will be professionally maintained with daily cleaning services, addressing a common complaint about beach facilities. The contract includes regular maintenance and servicing throughout the season.
If successful, the program could expand to other town beaches, though officials noted that flooding concerns and infrastructure requirements would limit potential locations for future facilities.
The Beach Commission will help evaluate the program's success during the 2025 season, with plans to potentially survey beachgoers about their experience with the new facilities.
The approved facility is expected to be in place from before Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, serving both residents and visitors during the peak beach season.
