Why are you running for the Marshfield Select Board? 

A

I am running for the Marshfield Select Board because I have been deeply disturbed by the actions of town leadership over the past year. I have always believed that individuals run for town government to serve the best interests of the community. However, what I have witnessed is a pattern of self-serving behavior, connections influencing decisions, and deals being made behind closed doors that do not benefit our town. I am motivated to bring integrity, transparency, and accountability to Marshfield’s leadership.

What are your top two priorities if elected, and how would you pursue them?

A

My first priority is to ensure that our town government operates as it is intended to—driven by the voice of the people through Town Meeting. Currently, this is not happening, and I will work to restore this fundamental process. My second priority is to improve the town’s website to make it more user-friendly. Our residents are hardworking and busy, and they should not have to struggle to find important information. A streamlined, accessible website will encourage greater involvement in town government.

What is the most important issue facing Marshfield right now? How would you address it?

A

The most pressing issue facing Marshfield is the lack of trust in our leadership. During the MBTA article discussions, the Planning Board did an excellent job, but the Select Board failed to question the article’s impact on the town. When residents voted against it, the town council attempted to scare people into changing their vote. This approach undermines trust and collaboration. We need leadership that works together and prioritizes the best interests of residents. I believe the MBTA article was voted down due to distrust in leadership, not opposition to affordable housing. Marshfield cannot afford this unfunded mandate. I will focus on rebuilding trust and fostering cooperation among all boards and committees.

How should Marshfield approach decisions related to its finances in light of projected budget shortfalls?

A

The Select Board should collaborate with department heads to address budget challenges. Departments should not be forced to compete against one another for funding. Additionally, the Advisory Board should play a key role in identifying essential budget items and areas where cuts can be made. This cooperative approach will ensure that financial decisions are made thoughtfully and fairly.

How would you ensure transparency and public engagement in town government?

A

Transparency is essential, and the prevalence of executive sessions—closed-door meetings—has led to speculation and distrust. Residents have a right to know what decisions are being made, especially regarding future contracts. I would hold office hours, engage with residents on social media (despite the current stigma around this), and explore the idea of a podcast to inform residents about the inner workings of town government. Town government should not operate like the Wizard of Oz behind a curtain—it should be open and accessible to all.

What personal or professional experience best prepares you to serve the people of Marshfield? 

A

As a business owner, I have experience with budgeting, decision-making, and working with diverse personalities. As an educator, I empower my students to be the best versions of themselves, and I believe this approach can benefit our town. Micromanagement has stifled creativity and productivity in our leadership, and I am committed to fostering collaboration and empowering individuals to contribute their best to Marshfield’s future.
