Walter L. Thompson, 86 a longtime resident of Pembroke Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2026.

Born on November 11, 1939 - Veterans Day, Walter was the son of late Leo R.Thompson and Eleanor C. Thompson. Raised in Dorchester, Boston, his birthday was a fitting one for a man who would dedicate so much to serving his country and his community. Walter proudly served in the United States Air Force before beginning a distinguished 30 year career with the Boston Fire Department. A dedicated firefighter and true public servant, he spent three decades protecting the people of Boston, ultimately retiring from the department's Marine Unit. His years of service reflected his courage, strong work ethic and commitment to helping others.

Walter and his wife, Irene F. Thompson, who passed away in 2009, built their family home in Pembroke more than 40years ago. It was there that they raised their family and created a lifetime of memories. Walter was a hard working, independent, and determined man who took great pride in his home, his yard, and anything that needed fixing. Whether working on a car, repairing something around their house or tending to his property, he believed if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right. Walter wasn't always a man of many affectionate words, but he showed his love through the countless things he did for the people he cared about. He made sure his children started the day with breakfast, packed unforgettable school lunches, and kept the family cars running and properly maintained. He taught his daughter Colleen everything from how to wash white-wall tires correctly to the importance of perseverance. Some of Colleen's fondest childhood memories include visiting her father at the firehouse, riding in fire trucks during parades, and believing her dad was a real-life superhero. There were early morning ski trips with her brother, when Walter encouraged her to keep trying even when she wanted to give up, and memorable trips into Boston's North End, where he always knew where to find the best pizza, These simple moments became lasting lessons in determination, responsibility and love.

As a grandfather, Walter found special joy in spending time with Paige and CJ. He always seemed to have a pocket full of lollipops ready to bring a smile to their faces and loved taking them out to eat. His grandchildren will always carry those special memories with them.

Walter is survived by his daughter, Colleen M. Hickman, and her husband, Joshua F. Hickman; his son, Christopher L. Thompson; and his grandchildren, Paige Elizabeth Hickman, Collin James Hickman, Raiden Brandon Lainey, River R. Thompson and Lani O. Steriti

He was predeceased by his wife, Irene F. Thompson, with whom he is now reunited with in heaven.

Walter will be remembered not only for his years of service, but for the life he built, the lessons he taught, and the many quiet ways he showed his love. To the city of Boston he was a firefighter. To his family, he was Dad, Papa and a hero in his own right.
