Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Buckley
Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” Buckley, of Hingham and formerly of Boston, passed away at age 85 on January 31, 2026, after a short illness.
She was raised in Charlestown and Dorchester, but spent two years living in Okinawa Japan during her grammar school days, while her father was stationed there with the Air Force during the Korean War, before returning to Dorchester. Betsy attended Fontbonne High School in Milton and received her undergraduate degree at Boston State College where she trained to be a teacher, before getting a Master’s degree in Education at SUNY Binghamton. She started her long career teaching all levels of high school English in the Boston Public Schools before moving to Stoughton High School, where she taught for more than 25 years.
While her time living in Japan left her with an abiding appreciation for Japanese art and culture, it was literature, especially English literature, which became her lifelong passion and she shared that passion with her many students. An inveterate reader and lifelong learner, she could always be found with several books “in progress.” She enjoyed traveling and spending time on Cape Cod, with friends and family. Her Catholic faith was always a source of strength and comfort to her and she enjoyed studying the Bible from a literary as well as a spiritual perspective. In recent years, she lived at Linden Ponds in Hingham where she was an active member of the community, including singing in the choir and participating in and leading classes.
She is survived by her four children, Kristin Daly (Dirk Killen), Michael Daly, Allison Daly, and Mark Daly (Hilary Daly), her eight grandchildren, Paige Kimball, Conor Killen, Bevin Killen, Ruby Shea, Reed Shea, Ava Daly, Bridget Daly, and Chase Daly. She also leaves her beloved brother, Robert “Bobby” Buckley, and her five nieces and one nephew, Lisa Feeley, Laura Perkins, Scott Buckley, Christine Allen, Coleen Martin, and Kathleen Lussier. Betsy greatly appreciated the care and hospitality she received from her brother and her nieces and nephew, particularly in her later years.
Visiting hours are from 4 pm to 7 pm on Friday, 2/6/26 at the Alfred Thomas Funeral Home, 326 Granite Avenue in Milton, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Agatha’s Church, 432 Adams Street in Milton, on Saturday, 2/7/26 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be private.
