Sweet Treats on the South Shore: Local Ice Cream Shops to Visit
When writing assignments were handed out in the South Shore Times newsroom, I graciously agreed to write up a few local ice cream shops.
And because I take my job seriously, I hit the road and sampled the goods, taking my coworkers (children) along with me.
Committed to journalistic integrity, we traveled to four different towns and diligently tried scoops from Hornstra Farm in Norwell, JJ’s Dairy Hut in Cohasset, Nona’s Homemade in Scituate, and Bay State Creamery in Hanover.
While my kids and I might not agree on our favorite flavors — I’m all about anything cheesecake, while they are loyal Moose Tracks and Cow Tracks fans — we can all agree on one thing: as the days grow longer and warmer, there’s no better way to savor the season than with a trip to one of the South Shore’s beloved ice cream shops. Whether you’re craving a classic cone, a rich sundae, or a creative flavor twist, these local favorites are serving up smiles one scoop at a time. Here are four must-visit ice cream spots to add to your list:
Hornstra Farm, Norwell
246 Prospect Street, Norwell, MA
Steeped in tradition, Hornstra Farm offers farm-fresh ice cream made with milk from their own herd of cows. Visitors love the rich, creamy texture and nostalgic flavors like Pasture Patty (chocolate ice cream with cookie dough, chocolate chips and fudge swirl) and Coffee Oreo, alongside seasonal specials Blueberry, Peach, and Pumpkin. Enjoy your treat on the scenic grounds, say hi to the baby cows, and don’t miss the opportunity to pick up fresh dairy products and baked goods from their farm store while you’re there.
JJ’s Dairy Hut, Cohasset
140 Chief Justice Cushing Highway, Cohasset, MA
JJ’s Dairy Hut is a classic roadside stop that has been delighting customers for generations. Known for its generous portions and family-friendly vibe, JJ’s serves both soft-serve and hard ice cream, along with sundaes and frappes. It’s the perfect spot for a post-beach day treat or a casual evening outing.
Nona’s Homemade, Scituate
1 Mill Wharf Plaza, Scituate, MA 02066
Located in the heart of Scituate Harbor, Nona’s Homemade is all about small-batch, handcrafted goodness. They use quality ingredients to create unique flavors like Banana Oreo, Maple Walnut, and classic favorites too. Nona’s is also beloved for its cheerful shop and its commitment to community—often collaborating with local businesses and hosting events. Be sure to grab a scoop and stroll the harbor for the full South Shore summer experience.
Bay State Creamery, Hanover
2055 Washington Street, Hanover, MA
One of the newer additions to the South Shore ice cream scene, Bay State Creamery in Merchant’s Row has quickly earned a following. Offering a wide variety of premium ice creams, including inventive seasonal specials and dairy-free options, Bay State is known for its welcoming atmosphere and playful menu (think outrageous sundaes and over-the-top milkshakes). It’s a great spot for families and anyone looking to try something a little different.
No matter which shop you choose, these South Shore gems guarantee a delicious and memorable treat. Summer’s short—make every scoop count!
