National Geographic Returns to Marshfield for "Harpoon Hunters"
A National Geographic documentary series focused on commercial fishing will return to Marshfield for its second season, with filming set to take place at Marshfield Town Landing on Joseph Driebeck Way.
The Select Board approved a film permit for Harpoon Hunters at its January 27 meeting, allowing Alternative Reality Television LLC to begin production from May 29 through July 31. The show follows harpoon fishermen as they navigate the waters off the South Shore.
Town Administrator Michael Maresco expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting its potential benefits for the community.
“This is kind of exciting,” Maresco said. “Last Friday night, the show that was taped last year aired on the national network all over the country and drew a lot of attention to Green Harbor and Brant Rock.”
According to officials, the first season of Harpoon Hunters showcased Marshfield’s fishing industry and its proximity to one of the richest fishing areas on the East Coast. Maresco emphasized that the show’s return is a testament to the town’s role in commercial fishing.
“Having them back here again is great publicity for the town,” he said.
Harbor Master Mike DiMeo, who had no objections to the permit, noted that last year’s filming was “pretty low key” and did not interfere with local fishing operations.
“No issues on that end,” DiMeo said in a memo to the board. “The first episode from season one starts next Friday night on National Geographic. Happy to see Marshfield on national TV.”
The Select Board’s approval allows the production company to operate at the town landing under the condition that it coordinates with the Harbor Master and the Marshfield Police and Fire Departments. The series is expected to air in early 2026.
