On a spring Sunday at The Bog in Kingston, the sound of skates carving ice will carry more than the thrill of competition. It will echo a community coming together with purpose.

Puck4ACure, a grassroots nonprofit founded by the Murphy family, returns April 26 with its annual hockey fundraiser, blending sport, storytelling, and support for families navigating Type 1 Diabetes.

What began as one family’s response to their son Reilly’s diagnosis at just eight years old has quickly grown into something much bigger. Faced with the uncertainty that comes with Type 1 Diabetes, the Murphys channeled their energy into action — creating an event that invites others into the journey.

“Like so many families, we felt overwhelmed and isolated,” the family shared. “We wanted to turn that fear into purpose — and create something that truly made an impact.”

That impact is already visible. In its first year, Puck4ACure raised more than $10,000 for research, while also building connections among local families, youth athletes, and supporters. The event felt less like a fundraiser and more like a gathering, one where stories were shared as freely as cheers from the stands.

Now, the 2026 event aims to deepen that sense of community. Youth mini tournaments will bring young players to the ice at the Mite, Squirt, and Pee Wee levels, while an adult game adds a spirited edge for older competitors. Off the ice, families can expect raffles, entertainment, and opportunities to get involved, whether through volunteering, donating, or simply showing up.

What sets Puck4ACure apart is its grassroots heart. The organization is entirely volunteer-run, with a focus on directing funds where they matter most: research and support for families facing the daily realities of Type 1 Diabetes.

Across the South Shore, hockey is already a shared language. At Puck4ACure, it becomes something more, a way to connect, to heal, and to remind families they are not alone.
