Movement Matters: Helping Kids Balance Schoolwork and Play
By Starland Sportsplex & Fun Park
The school bells are ringing again across the South Shore, and while backpacks are getting heavier with notebooks and sharpened pencils, it’s a good time to remember that kids need to carry something else into the school year too: movement.
After a summer of swimming, biking, and neighborhood games that seemed to stretch until the fireflies came out, fall can bring a big shift in kids’ daily rhythms. Long hours at desks, homework, and screens can quickly crowd out activity. But building in ways to move, whether through play, sports, or silly games at home, helps kids stay happy, healthy, and focused.
Recess and After-School Fun
There’s nothing like recess to break up the school day. A game of tag, shooting hoops, or even just running around on the playground shakes out wiggles and helps kids reset for the rest of their lessons. Teachers often notice that kids return from outdoor breaks more focused and ready to learn.
But the movement doesn’t need to stop once the final bell rings. After-school play, whether it’s an impromptu soccer match at the park, chalk-drawn hopscotch on the driveway, or simply riding bikes with friends, is just as important. Those unstructured moments give kids the chance to burn energy, be creative, and spend time together without schedules or screens.
Sharpening Skills with Youth Clinics
For children who want to take their love of sports a little further, local clinics offer a chance to practice skills, meet new teammates, and have fun in a structured way. Hanover’s Starland Sportsplex is one of the busiest hubs on the South Shore for youth programs. They offer Basketball Clinics that focus on the basics like dribbling, passing, and shooting while also encouraging teamwork and sportsmanship.
Clinics like these are a perfect bridge between casual play and organized leagues. They give kids the confidence to try new moves, learn from coaches, and discover a deeper joy in the game.
When the Weather Doesn’t Cooperate
Let’s face it - New England weather isn’t always on our side. A rainy Saturday or chilly afternoon doesn’t have to mean a day on the couch. Some of the best family memories come from indoor games that get everyone moving.
Classic choices like The Floor is Lava can transform a living room into an obstacle course, while Charades turns guessing into giggles. Even simple dance parties in the kitchen (bonus points for costumes or silly hats) are an easy way to keep the energy up. The trick is to think of movement as play, not a chore.
As kids ease into the new school year, families can set the tone for routines that balance learning with activity. Scheduling time to play outside, signing up for a fun clinic, or turning rainy days into game days are small steps that add up.
And kids aren’t the only ones who benefit - parents who join in can sneak in a little exercise themselves while modeling the idea that staying active is just part of everyday life.
So this fall, let’s make “back to school” also mean “back to movement.” After all, the best lessons don’t always happen at a desk. They often start with a ball, a game, and a whole lot of laughter.
