Two Hanover residents will take on the 54th Annual ASICS Falmouth Road Race next month as members of Team BIA-MA, raising awareness and funds for the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts.
Lauren Brumber and Michael "Titanium Mike" Wolo are among 29 runners representing the organization in the annual race, scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 16.
Brumber is returning for her second year with Team BIA-MA. She is running in honor of her mother's recovery from a brain injury following brain stem surgery. This year's race carries additional meaning, as her son Leo, who was in utero when she completed last year's race at 21 weeks pregnant, will be cheering her on from the sidelines.
Wolo, a first-time Team BIA-MA runner, is a traumatic brain injury survivor whose recovery began after a workplace accident left him crushed beneath a 10,000-pound bundle of granite. Doctors gave him only a 2% chance of survival. His participation in the race marks another milestone in a recovery journey focused on resilience and demonstrating that life after a traumatic brain injury is possible.
"We are excited and thankful for this incredible team of inspiring runners who are determined to accomplish their personal milestones while raising awareness for brain injury," BIA-MA Chief Executive Officer Nicole Godaire said in a statement. "Each runner brings a powerful personal connection to brain injury, which makes their dedication even more meaningful and helps shine a light on the impact brain injury has on individuals, families, and communities."
While the Falmouth Road Race is not exclusively a charity event, its Numbers for Nonprofits program allows organizations such as the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts to participate while raising funds to support their missions.
The Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts is the state's only nonprofit dedicated exclusively to improving the lives of people affected by brain injury through advocacy, education, prevention, research, and support.
