Behind the Seams: How to Make Your Bras Last Longer
By Beata Takahashi, owner of Tutti Bellissima Intimates
When it comes to building a wardrobe, many of us focus on what the world sees: dresses, jeans, and shoes. But the foundation of feeling comfortable and confident often begins with what’s underneath. Investing in high-quality undergarments, especially bras, is not only about fit and fashion, but also about support and durability. And just like any investment piece, proper care is key to making them last.
Why does this matter? Simply put, quality undergarments are an investment in yourself. A well-made bra can provide superior support and comfort, but only if it’s cared for correctly. With the right attention, your undergarments will retain their shape, elasticity, and fabric integrity, extending their lifespan and keeping you feeling your best. Neglect them, and you’ll find yourself shopping for replacements far sooner than you’d like.
Here are three simple steps to keep your favorite pieces looking and feeling like new:
1. Wash (and Wear) with Care
Your routine makes the biggest difference in the life of your undergarments. Harsh detergents, hot water, and machine agitation can quickly break down delicate fabrics and elastic. “Think of bras as delicate instruments,” says Janet of Tutti Bellissima. “Handwashing is always best, but if you do use the machine, make sure to use a lingerie bag and the gentle cycle with cold water.” A mild detergent designed for delicates will help preserve fabrics without leaving residue.
It’s also important not to wear the same bra two days in a row. Elastic needs time to rest and recover its shape, and giving your bras a break between wears is one of the easiest ways to extend their life.
2. Dry Gently
Dryers are the nemesis of undergarments. High heat warps elastic and damages fine fibers, shortening the life of your bras and underwear. Instead, lay them flat on a towel or hang them by the center gore (the small piece between the cups) to air-dry. Avoid hanging by the straps, which can cause stretching. It may take a bit longer, but the payoff is garments that maintain their shape and support.
3. Store Thoughtfully
The way you store undergarments matters more than you might think. For bras, avoid folding cups inside each other, which can create creases. Instead, lay them flat in a drawer or stack them so the cups nest naturally. Keeping a dedicated space for your delicates ensures they aren’t squashed or snagged by other items.
Taking these small, mindful steps not only extends the life of your undergarments but also protects your investment in quality pieces. After all, when you care for your lingerie, it continues to care for you providing the comfort, confidence, and support you deserve every day.
