Pub Wins Liquor License Approval from Cohasset Select Board

COHASSET - A new gastro pub is coming to Cohasset this summer, following the Select Board’s unanimous vote Tuesday to approve a liquor license transfer and common victualler license for the incoming restaurant, Hooper’s Judge.

The business, set to take over the space formerly occupied by the Blue Oar at 9 Depot Court, is being developed by Brian McLaughlin, a veteran of the restaurant industry and owner of Locales Tacos & Tequila in Hingham.

Attorney Jeff DiBona, representing McLaughlin, outlined the proposal during the board’s April 29 meeting, noting that the transfer includes an on-premise annual all-alcohol license. The space will maintain its current layout with a 124-person occupancy, including 80 indoor seats and 24 seasonal patio seats.

McLaughlin, who has been TIPs certified and plans to manage the establishment full-time, said he is excited to bring something new to the community.

According to McLaughlin, the restaurant will operate seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., and may occasionally offer brunch on weekends or holidays. He anticipates opening as early as July, pending approval from the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC).

Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley noted that a background check on McLaughlin showed “no issues whatsoever.”

Board members welcomed the proposal. Select Board member Jack Creighton praised the applicant’s approach. “I think it’s a good example of doing it right, following the rules,” Creighton said. “Thank you for providing a good example of how a responsible business can handle a very sensitive issue like liquor licenses.”

The board also approved a common victualler license for the business. An application for an entertainment license—requested to allow occasional indoor live acoustic music—will be taken up at the board’s next meeting.
