Winter Storm to Bring Snow and Ice to South Shore Thursday

Snow, sleet, and freezing rain will create hazardous travel conditions across the South Shore on Thursday, with potential power outages and slick roads.

Residents of the South Shore should prepare for a significant winter storm expected to impact the region on Thursday, February 6, 2025. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM EST Thursday. The advisory warns of mixed precipitation, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with total snow and sleet accumulations between 1 and 4 inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze. These conditions are anticipated to make roadways slippery, potentially affecting both morning and evening commutes.

The storm is part of a larger system moving across the Midwest and Northeast, bringing a significant freezing rain threat from Iowa to New England. As warm, moisture-rich air overlays subfreezing ground temperatures, freezing rain is expected to develop, making travel perilous and potentially disrupting power services.

In the South Shore area, snow is expected to overspread the region between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM Thursday. The snow will then change to a mixture of sleet and freezing rain as the day progresses. Mixed precipitation may change to all rain near and especially southeast of the Boston to Providence corridor. Temperatures northwest of I-95 will likely remain below freezing into the evening rush hour.

Following the storm, Friday is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high near 42°F (6°C) and west winds between 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 28 mph. Saturday will be partly sunny, with a high near 34°F (1°C) and west winds around 6 mph. Another winter storm could impact the area over the weekend, with snow before 5:00 AM Sunday, then snow and sleet likely. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts as the weekend approaches.

Given the potential for hazardous travel conditions and possible power outages, residents are urged to plan accordingly. Stay informed by monitoring local news outlets and the National Weather Service for the latest updates.
