South Shore residents will have six opportunities this fall to safely dispose of hazardous household materials including gasoline, pesticides, oil-based paints and automotive fluids.
The South Shore Recycling Cooperative will hold Household Hazardous Waste Collection events from September through November in communities across the region. Residents of participating member towns can register for any of the scheduled events rather than waiting for a collection in their own community.
The fall schedule includes:
Sept. 12: Abington, East Bridgewater, Hanson and Whitman
Sept. 19: Marshfield
Sept. 26: Braintree
Oct. 17: Hanover and Rockland
Oct. 24: Plymouth
Nov. 14: Hull
Collections run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required, and the specific collection location is provided to residents after they sign up.
Accepted materials include gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze, automotive fluids, oil and solvent-based paints and stains, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, rechargeable and lithium batteries, fluorescent tubes, mercury-containing products, drain cleaners and other hazardous household chemicals.
Propane tanks, fire extinguishers, flares and asbestos may also be accepted at certain events, depending on the collection location and applicable restrictions.
Latex and acrylic paints are not accepted because they are not considered hazardous waste. Prescription medications, medical sharps, lead-acid vehicle batteries, explosives and radioactive materials are also excluded from the program.
Residents are encouraged to keep hazardous products in their original containers or clearly label them before arriving. Liquids should be packed securely in cardboard boxes or rigid plastic containers rather than bags. Gasoline must be transported in an approved gas can.
Participating communities subsidize the program for their residents, although limits and fees for larger quantities can vary by town. Proof of residency is required.
