Foster Elementary School welcomed students back from winter break to their brand new building on Friday, marking a significant milestone for the Hingham school community.
Select Board member William Ramsey, whose daughter attends fifth grade at Foster, described the opening as "a great day for the community, especially the foster community."
"It was a wonderful, wonderful project," Ramsey said during Monday's Select Board meeting. "I want to thank all the residents who supported it. It was a big ask at town meeting, but it was a wonderful, wonderful project."
Town Administrator Tom Mayo received special recognition for ensuring town departments prioritized the project's completion. Select Board Chair Joe Fisher thanked Mayo for "the response of the town of the building department, just making sure that this was a priority, that if there were snags, they were resolved promptly so that the foster school could move forward."
While the building is now open for students, some construction work continues on site. According to Ramsey, "Right now it's currently an active construction site, but they are going to offer tours in their future so the public can get in and see the beautiful building that it is."
Mayo emphasized the collaborative effort to ensure safety during the opening, noting that "everyone's commitment to making that building safe... worked out fantastic. Everyone wants to help."
