HINGHAM – Hingham officials are encouraging residents to share their feedback as the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) conducts a comprehensive water transportation study aimed at improving and expanding ferry services across the region.
At the Oct. 7 Select Board meeting, town officials discussed the ongoing study, which has been in progress since 2022, and its importance to Hingham residents who rely on ferry transportation.
“The purpose of this study is to help the MBTA to do two basic things - look at ways to expand water transportation in their service area as well as to strengthen existing service,” said Assistant Town Administrator Art Robert. “I certainly understand that over the years the Hingham community’s been very vocal about ferry service, retaining it during times of great budget pressure.”
Robert noted that residents can participate in an upcoming public engagement opportunity. An in-person session will be held at the Hingham Shipyard ferry terminal on Oct. 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. Details and links to both events are available on the MBTA’s website under “MBTA Water Transportation Study.”
Select Board member Julie Strehle added that residents can also provide input through an online survey.
Robert emphasized that residents may also sign up for updates to stay informed about the study’s progress and future opportunities for involvement.
Hingham officials said they plan to remain active in the process, underscoring the ferry’s importance to the town’s transportation network and local economy.
