HANSON — Hanson residents could soon see their library nearly triple in size after the town received a $100,000 Planning & Design grant from the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program.

The grant supports plans to expand and renovate the Hanson Public Library, a facility built in 1990 at 8,000 square feet and deemed too small for community needs more than a decade ago. The proposed project would increase the library’s footprint to 22,000 square feet, adding dedicated spaces for children, teens and adults, along with larger meeting rooms, community gathering areas and outdoor green spaces.

“The Hanson Public Library is on the brink of a transformative moment — one that could benefit our entire community for generations,” the Hanson Library Building Committee said in a statement.

In April, the Select Board voted to make 3.2 acres of the former Maquan School property available for consideration in the project. The library has already secured $150,000 in trust and private funds to complement the state award.

“MPLCP grants are highly competitive and awarded infrequently. Hanson is ranked #1 in the state for medium-sized libraries for this grant round — a testament to our community’s commitment and future planning,” the committee said.

Early next year, officials anticipate a second MPLCP grant that could cover about half of construction costs, reducing the financial impact on the town.

Library leaders said the project represents more than new space. “This project is more than just the construction of a building — it's a long-term investment in education, access, opportunity, and connection,” the committee said.
