Summer Water Bans Begin Across South Shore Towns

Despite a rainy spring, South Shore towns are enacting annual outdoor watering restrictions to prevent summer drought stress.

Despite the deluge of rain this spring, towns across the South Shore are implementing their annual outdoor watering restrictions in anticipation of summer droughts. Stay tuned to the South Shore Times and your town’s website for more information throughout the summer. 

Scituate: 

The annual watering ban, Tier 1, is currently in effect. 

  • Automatic/outdoor Irrigation systems may be used 1 day per week, per your voting district

  • All outdoor watering must happen before 9 AM or after 5 PM

  • The restrictions do not technically include private wells, all residents are encouraged to use water responsibly during the warmer month.

Hingham

Effective 6/24/25, Hingham is now at a Level 2: Mandatory Water Ban due to the Weir River Water System is experiencing a drastic drop in water storage tank level.

  • All non-essential outdoor usage is prohibited including:

    • Irrigation using automatic sprinklers or soaker hoses

    • Washing vehicles, exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways, or sidewalks

    • Filling swimming pools

  • The Weir River Water System may also ban the use of handheld watering at its discretion.

Norwell

Effective 6/23/25, the town of Norwell has Tier 2 Restrictions in effect. 

  • Automated irrigation systems, including sprinklers, may be used 2 days per week as follows:

    • Even-numbered addresses may water on Tuesdays and Friday ONLY, 5 PM to 9 AM

    • Odd-numbered addresses may water on Mondays and Thursday ONLY, 5 PM to 9 AM

  • Using hand held hoses is allowed anytime

Marshfield

The town of Marshfield has the following outdoor watering restrictions:

  • No outdoor watering between 9 AM and 5 PM from May 1 to October 31

  • Odd numbers houses permitted to water only on odd numbered days

  • Even numbered houses permitted only on even numbered days

  • There are currently no restriction on handheld watering

Cohasset

Cohasset currently has no outdoor watering bans in place. 

  • Drought status is monitored by reservoir levels, rain fall, and stream flow from the two dams, located on Beechwood Street and at Aaron River Reservoir. 

  • If any of these three variables becomes too low, the town’s drought status may change and watering bans may be put into place.

Hanover

The town of Hanover has enacted the following restrictions on outdoor watering:

  • Outdoor watering is only permitted between 6-9 AM and 6-9 PM with handheld hoses only

  • Odd numbered addresses may water on odd-numbered days

  • Even numbered addresses may water on even-numbered days

  • The use of any sprinklers is prohibited.
