Amidst the noise of police sirens and booming music from the buses, the loudest sound as the crew team came back from the MPSRA championship regatta was the excited cheering from the people gathered to watch along Main Street. This Friday at the Hingham football team’s successful playoff game, the excitement and cheering continued, not just for the football players, but for the Crew team as well
The Crew team was honored for their overall Massachusetts Public School Rowing Association championship title, as well as the girls’ team’s third consecutive championship title. To commemorate the achievement, the team was invited to walk across the football field during halftime of the Hingham Harbormen vs Minnechaug Regional Falcons game on Friday night. The boys’ and girls’ Crew team captains also had the opportunity to ring the bell to open the game as honorary captains.
Dozens of rowers gathered to walk across the football field under the lights and to the cheers of a huge and vocal crowd of Hingham supporters. Claire Wang, a freshman and member of the girls' crew team, shared, “I think it’s such an honor to be invited to walk to halftime. It's such a cool experience, especially for my freshman year. I'm glad that we’re getting recognized!”
The Crew team spent many hours practicing, beginning in the middle of August, to work for a successful Fall Season. In addition to building strength, they built a strong community and enthusiasm. Abby Farris, another member of the girls’ team, explained, “I feel like Hingham Crew is like a family, everybody is so kind.”Abby also explained that the event was important “because football games bring everyone together.”
The Crew team’s walk at halftime was one more moment of school and team spirit, adding to the excitement for Hingham sports this fall. While the Crew team has already secured its title as State Champions, many of Hingham’s other sports teams are also on track for success this season. The school’s successes come from the sustained hard work of every team member. That cooperation and the success it leads to result in instances of spirit and excitement, like this past Friday night, when the community came together to cheer each other on.
