Why We Founded the South Shore Times

Nick Puleo

At the South Shore Times, our mission is simple: to connect, inform, and celebrate the communities we call home. As lSouth Shore residents, we’ve lived the stories that shape this region—our towns are vibrant, our neighbors are inspiring, and our local businesses are brimming with potential. But as we’ve watched local journalism struggle in recent years, we saw an undeniable gap: where was the daily, reliable, and nuanced coverage that truly reflected life here?

This is why we created the South Shore Times. Our goal isn’t to tell you what to think—it’s to give you the information you need to make decisions for yourself. Whether you’re following local government decisions, cheering on your child’s sports team, or looking to support a neighborhood business, we’re here to keep you connected to the stories that matter most.

What Does It Mean to Be “Hyper-Rocal”?

We call our model “Hyper-Rocal" - regional-local - because we believe the South Shore is more than the sum of its parts. The businesses, schools, and cultural events that make Scituate special often have connections to Cohasset, Hingham, or Norwell. Our coverage transcends town borders to show the bigger picture of what makes the South Shore so unique.

At the same time, we know that your town is your priority. That’s why we’ve designed the South Shore Times to let you tailor your experience. Want to stay hyper-focused on Hingham? We’ve got you covered: just click your town section. Curious about what’s happening across the greater region? You can do that too.

Why Launch Now?

Is it a crazy time to start a local news site? Maybe. But when is the right time to fight for the stories that bind us together? With the South Shore growing and evolving, the need for accurate, thoughtful, and community-driven reporting has never been more urgent. We’ve seen the impact of fragmented news coverage: misinformation spreads, civic engagement wanes, and businesses struggle to get their message out.

We believe the solution lies in collaboration—with you. Whether you’re a reader, a business owner, or a civic leader, your partnership is what makes this vision possible. Together, we can create a space where news is free, trustworthy, and accessible to everyone.

Always Free, Always Local

From day one, we made two promises: the South Shore Times will always be free to readers, and it will always be locally owned. By remaining independent, we ensure that our coverage reflects the priorities of our communities—not those of far-away parent companies. We’re here to serve the South Shore and only the South Shore, bringing you stories that matter without ever putting them behind a paywall.

More Than News

At the South Shore Times, our commitment goes beyond headlines. We aim to foster a space where diverse voices are heard and where tough conversations can happen respectfully. We highlight the achievements of local organizations, dive into the challenges facing our towns, and celebrate the people who make the South Shore such a remarkable place to live.

From covering town meetings to spotlighting a Marshfield entrepreneur’s big idea, we see every story as an opportunity to connect the dots—to show how our shared experiences build stronger communities. We’re here to shine a light on what’s working, what needs fixing, and, most importantly, what’s possible when we work together.

Your Community, Your Voice

The South Shore Times exists because of a belief that communities thrive when they’re informed and engaged. As your daily news platform, we are proud to be independent, free, and accessible to everyone. We’re not beholden to corporate interests or outside influences; we’re beholden to you.

As we grow, we welcome your input. Tell us what’s missing, share the stories you want to see, and partner with us to build a resource that reflects the best of the South Shore. This is your community, your voice, and your news.

Because at the end of the day, we didn’t launch the South Shore Times just to report the news—we launched it to bring people together. And that’s a mission we’re proud to share with you.
