News Staff

John Marshall Madden, 70, of Plymouth, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 7th, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the devoted husband of Patricia M. (Flaherty) Madden.

John was the loving father of Christopher Madden and his wife, Raychel, of Virginia Beach, VA, and of Ryan Madden and his fiancée, Kelly, of Weymouth. He was a proud and cherished grandfather to Grier, Bret, and Sloan Madden. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Madden, and his wife, Mary Helen, of Santa Fe, NM, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Born in Milton on February 8, 1956, John was the son of the late John Marshall Madden and Antoinette Marie (Evaska) Madden. Raised in Hull, he graduated from Hull High School in 1974 and continued his education at St. Michael's College, graduating in 1978. While in Burlington, he met the love of his life, Patricia. Together, they built a home in Plymouth, where they raised their family.

John dedicated his professional life to public service. He began his career as a town accountant in Plymouth, MA, and in 2006 became the first-ever Finance Director for the Town of Duxbury. There, he maintained the town's AAA bond rating for over a decade until his retirement in 2018.

Deeply committed to his family and community, John was actively involved in numerous organizations, including the Plymouth South Boosters Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Touchdown Club at Norwich University, and the St. Michael's Club Hockey Team.

John's wide range of interests included rugby, carpentry, cooking, skiing, and golfing-having worked as a caddy in his younger years. Above all, he cherished time with his family, particularly their many trips to their cabin in Bridgton, Maine. He will also be dearly missed by his loyal dog, Cleveland.

John will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his service to his community, and the warmth and joy he brought to those around him.

A visitation will be held at the Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Rd. (MANOMET) Plymouth, on Tuesday, April 14th, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place the following day at St. Bonaventure's Church, (MANOMET) Plymouth, at 11:00 am.
