South Shore Women: Let’s Unhook These Bra Myths

Many South Shore residents may be wearing the wrong bra size—and not even know it.

Proper bra fitting remains a confusing topic for many, despite its impact on posture, comfort, and long-term breast health. Misinformation continues to circulate, preventing many women from getting the support they need.

“There are so many myths out there about how a bra should fit,” said Beata Takahashi, a certified bra fitter in Norwell. “We see it every day—women come in thinking they’re one size, but they leave wearing something totally different and feeling much more comfortable.”

Below are five common bra-fitting myths—and the facts that debunk them:

Myth 1: Your bra size is the same across all brands.

Fact: Bra sizing varies widely depending on the brand, country, and even the specific bra style. A 34C in one label might fit more like a 36B in another.

“There’s no true universal standard,” Takahashi said. “That’s why trying bras on is key.”

Myth 2: You should fasten a new bra on the tightest hook.

Fact: Bras should fit snugly on the loosest hook when new. As the band stretches over time, you can move to tighter hooks to maintain support.

Myth 3: Cup size is just about breast volume.

Fact: Cup size is relative to the band size. A 32D and a 38D have very different cup volumes. This is known as “sister sizing.”

“It’s not just about the letter—it’s about the whole ratio,” Takahashi said. “A D cup in a smaller band could be smaller than a B in a larger band.”

Myth 4: Underwire means discomfort.

Fact: A properly fitted underwire should not dig in or cause pain. Discomfort often stems from wearing the wrong size or style for your body shape.

Myth 5: You only need a fitting once.

Fact: Weight changes, hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, and age can all affect breast size and shape. Experts recommend a fitting once a year.

“We always suggest an annual check-in,” Takahashi said. “Bodies change more than most people realize.”

For residents looking to get fitted, Takahashi’s boutique, Tutti Bellissima Intimates in Norwell, offers complimentary fittings with trained staff. Most fittings take less than 15 minutes and can significantly improve daily comfort.

“People walk out standing taller and feeling more confident,” Takahashi said.
