Savage Godfrey Gallery will open a new fall exhibition this month featuring three artists whose work draws on traditions of handwork, including stitching, quilting and woodworking.
“Common Thread” will run from Sept. 26 through Dec. 23 at the gallery, 693 Main St. in Norwell. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. The three featured artists are expected to attend, and the event is open to the public.
The exhibition brings together work by Marcia Ballou, Mia Cross and Laura Petrovich-Cheney, each approaching traditional craft techniques through a different medium.
Ballou, a Marshfield resident, creates collage and stitched-fiber pieces inspired by color, light and the natural world. Her work combines appliqué with contrasting shapes, textures and colors. The exhibition marks her second collaboration with Savage Godfrey Gallery following a 2023 exhibition at Boston Children’s Hospital’s Mini Art Museum.
Cross is a Providence-based multidisciplinary artist whose work includes painting, printmaking, sculpture, sewing and murals. She previously worked with Savage Godfrey Gallery on “The Car that Went Far,” a two-wall illustrated mural and coloring book created for the Boston Children’s Hospital Travel Vaccine Clinic. Cross earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting and sculpture from Boston University.
Petrovich-Cheney, who is based in Marblehead, creates quilt-inspired sculptures from salvaged architectural wood. Her work explores themes of home, memory, loss and renewal while incorporating techniques rooted in pattern making and quilt construction. Her work has been exhibited nationally, and a solo exhibition is currently on view at the University of North Carolina Asheville.
Savage Godfrey Gallery is a multigenerational, woman-owned business offering art acquisition, appraisal, sales, commissions and collection management services. Gallery Director Christina Godfrey is a Norwell resident, and the gallery represents emerging and mid-career artists from the region.
