From audience to stage at Company Theatre interactive night

“Scene, Song, and Sip” invites guests to perform, laugh, and enjoy a one-of-a-kind evening in Norwell

For decades, The Company Theatre in Norwell has been more than a performance space. It has been a launching pad for young actors, a second act for adults rediscovering creativity, and a gathering place where the South Shore’s arts community takes shape.

Next month, the theater is inviting the community to step directly into that experience.

On Friday, June 5, “Scene, Song, and Sip” will turn a typical night at the theater into something far more interactive. Instead of simply watching from their seats, audience members will have the chance to join performers on stage, shape scenes in real time, and influence songs through a playful, Mad Libs-style format.

The evening is designed to feel equal parts live theater, game night, and social outing. Classic theater snacks like popcorn and candy will be available alongside a cash bar, creating a relaxed atmosphere where attendees can participate as much or as little as they want.

“It’s your chance to go from the audience to the stage,” said Zoe Bradford, the theater’s co-founder and artistic director. “People don’t always realize how fun and accessible theater can be until they’re part of it.”

Rather than a traditional performance, the event leans into spontaneity and audience interaction. Guests may find themselves helping rewrite song lyrics on the spot, volunteering for scenes, or simply laughing along as performers adapt to audience suggestions in real time.

“This isn’t a sit quietly and clap kind of event,” said Michael Hammond, managing director of development. “It’s about laughing, participating, and sharing an experience together.”

While ticket proceeds will support the theater’s ongoing stage restoration campaign, organizers say the focus of the evening is firmly on creating a memorable night out for the community.

The restoration project includes upgrades to the stage surface, curtains, lighting, and surrounding infrastructure after decades of productions and heavy use.

“This stage has been through thousands of performances,” Hammond said. “It’s been built on, danced on, even flooded for productions. We even flooded it for Singin’ in the Rain.

The Company Theatre says the restoration campaign is already about 70 percent complete, with a matching grant helping move the project closer to the finish line. But unlike many fundraising events, organizers say attendees will not encounter donation asks throughout the evening. Your ticket purchase is your donation.

“At the end of the day, this is really about creating a fun, shared experience,” Bradford said. “The community is supporting the theater simply by showing up and participating.”

That sense of community connection has long defined the theater. Over the years, generations of South Shore residents have taken classes, performed on stage, or discovered a love of theater inside the Norwell venue. Some participants have gone on to professional careers, while others continue returning simply for the joy of performing and gathering together.

For attendees, “Scene, Song, and Sip” offers something increasingly rare: a chance to step away from passive entertainment and become part of the show itself.

Tickets are available online and at the box office. The event is for audiences 18 and older.
